FAQ: Home Security & Alarm Integration
Can a Z-Wave home automation system double as a home security system?
Yes it can! In fact, 90% of lifestyle security systems in North America are based on Z-Wave. The components available in the sensors and security section of our store are designed for home automation and home safety/security. A self-monitored Z-Wave alarm system is both cost effective and easy to install and unlike a traditional wired system, you can expand it at any time and pull it down effortlessly if you ever decide to move house.
I already have a standard wired alarm system in my home. Can this be integrated with Z-Wave?
Depending on the capabilities of your standard alarm system, it may be possible to integrate it with a Z-Wave home automation system by connecting its outputs (status and alarming) to a Z-Wave binary sensor. This enables the alarm to trigger the sensor and send an alert to your Z-Wave network allowing you to activate lights, sirens, cameras, and anything else you can control through your Z-Wave gateway. It may also be possible to connect a Z-Wave switch to the alarm's input(s) to simulate a wired sensor. This will allow a Z-Wave event or scene to activate the alarm.
From a technical perspective, any alarm system that can be controlled via TCP/IP or RS-232 protocols should allow for some level of integration with a Z-Wave network. As an example, Vera home controllers allow direct integration with a number of DSC PowerSeries alarm panels over Ethernet using a free 3rd party plugin.

Can a Z-Wave motion sensor operate as a security sensor?
Can I lock and unlock multiple doors at once?
Yes. Our wireless door locks enable you to lock and unlock one or more doors simultaneously using Z-Wave scenes. For example, you could build a scene which enables you to unlock your front and back doors when someone enters a specific access code. With Vera, you can also manage access codes centrally.
Can I integrate my IP security cameras?
Generic IP based cameras will integrate with most Z-Wave gateways (such as Vera) and our HikVision IP cameras are officially supported by both Vera and Fibaro Home Center. It should be noted though that most home automation controllers are not video surveillance systems. A dedicated solution with cloud or local server storage capabilities is recommended for this.
Do you sell Z-Wave intercom systems?
There are no Z-Wave intercom systems on the market today that we would recommend. A much better alternative would be to incorporate one of our Home Guards Security Camera Kits. These cameras offer 2-way audio from any smart device, are simple to install (no wires) and will provide additional security features you just can't get with a standard intercom system.
