Home Center 3 Lite FAQ
What is Home Center 3 Lite?
HC3 Lite is the latest smart home controller from FIBARO, and a part of the wider FIBARO System.
Who is it for?
HC3 Lite is for people who want everything HC3 can offer, but on a smaller scale. It has been designed to provide advanced smart home capabilities in apartments, small homes, holiday homes, home offices etc.
What are the differences between HC3 and HC3 Lite?
A thorough comparison between HC3 and HC3 Lite is available here. Where HC3 imposes no limitations on the number of devices and scenes it will support, FIBARO recommend the following for HC3 Lite:-
Can I use HC3 Lite to expand my existing Z-Wave network?
Yes. The HC3 Lite can be used as a standalone smart home controller or, as a "slave" to an existing Home Center 3 installation (a firmware update to enable this feature may be required). This is a great way of expanding an existing Z-Wave network if you need to cover more space or have more devices to control. In this scenario, you can use one FIBARO Home Center 3 as the master and one or more Home Center 3 Lite's as slave devices and, control all devices connected to either controller from the master HC3 web interface.
What are the benefits of the new Z-Wave 700 chip in HC3 Lite?
The latest generation Z-Wave 700 (Z-Wave Plus v2) chip included with the FIBARO HC3 Lite offers significant improvements in range, performance and security when compared with the previous 300 series chip included in HC2 Lite. An overview of the key benefits of Z-Wave 700 are provided here.
In terms of Z-Wave 500, most consumers won't notice a major difference between this and the new 700 series, and for now, most Z-Wave products on the market are still equipped with Z-Wave 500 chips. It will take some time before we see the majority of devices on the market upgraded to the latest Z-Wave 700.
Fortunately, the Z-Wave protocol is fully backward compatible and the fact that HC3 Lite includes this new technology right now, only ensures your controller will be able to take advantage of the latest Z-Wave features when this becomes more common place across more devices in the near future.
Why doesn't HC3 include the new Z-Wave 700 chip?
When the HC3 was developed, Z-Wave 700 technology was not ready for production and it did not become available for about a year after the HC3 was released to market.
It looks like HC3 Lite doesn't have an ethernet port. Is that right?
Correct. HC3 Lite does not have an RJ45 ethernet port and connects to your LAN via 2.4GHz Wi-Fi (802.11 b/g/n) only. It may be possible to connect an RJ45 to Micro-USB adaptor, as the HC3 Lite includes a single Micro-USB port for power. With a suitable adaptor, Micro-USB can serve both data and power.
Does HC3 Lite support Zigbee?
No. It only supports Z-Wave and Wi-Fi for connecting your controller to your LAN.
Is the HC3 Lite interface the same as HC3?
Yes. The web app and companion apps for Android and Apple devices are identical to HC3.
